The Ministry of Education and Higher Education announced that it has completed its preparations to welcome 419,373 students across all educational stages in 649 public and private schools and kindergartens, with the 2026–2027 academic year beginning tomorrow, Sunday. All academic, administrative and operational preparations have been completed to ensure an organised and effective start to the educational process.
The Council of Ministers praised the Ministry’s readiness for the new academic year during its regular meeting last Wednesday. It also highlighted the continued achievements and progress in the education sector, appreciating the efforts made to improve the efficiency and performance of teaching staff, develop curricula and specialised education in line with scientific and technological developments, and strengthen the quality of education and its outcomes. The Council also noted the continued expansion in the construction of new schools according to the latest international standards and specifications.
As part of its preparations for the new academic year and efforts to increase capacity and meet the growing demand for education, the Ministry opened six new public schools covering different educational stages. These schools provide 3,600 student places across several areas of the country. Maintenance and renovation work in public schools has also been completed, and facilities have been prepared to receive students.
The Ministry has continued investing in its educational workforce as a key part of improving the quality of education. There are currently 17,679 teachers in public schools and kindergartens, in addition to 25,372 teachers and administrative staff in private schools and kindergartens. Preparations also included the appointment of 210 teachers from the “Tomouh” programme, which is organised by the Ministry in cooperation with the College of Education at Qatar University, to fill teaching vacancies in public schools.
The Ministry has also focused on continuous professional development. The annual educational meeting included more than 15 training workshops covering teaching practices, educational methods and performance development. Participants in the “Qiyadat”, “Tamheen” and “Bidaya Mowaffaqa” programmes were also recognised in appreciation of their skills and to support professional and leadership development in the education sector. Through its Training and Development Centre, the Ministry will continue to implement approved training plans for educational staff throughout the academic year.
In the private education sector, 156 nurseries are currently operating, while seven additional nurseries are under licensing and are expected to open during the 2026–2027 academic year. In addition, 81 nurseries receive children with mild disabilities who require integration.
The Ministry has also provided 14,561 student places through the private schools’ social responsibility project. These include free places, reduced-fee places and places supported through the educational voucher system, helping to expand educational opportunities and choices for students.
School transport services have been strengthened through the provision of 3,000 buses of different sizes. In addition, 122 buses and 400 cars have been allocated to transport students with disabilities.
Preparations also covered school health and safety. The Ministry approved 26 qualified food companies to supply food to canteens in public schools and approved a list of food items that meet recognised health standards. Security and safety requirements have also been completed, while air conditioning and cooling services have been strengthened to help provide a safe, healthy and attractive school environment.
At the academic and organisational level, schools have completed class timetables and student allocations, and have provided textbooks and educational materials. Orientation meetings were also organised for new staff to introduce them to the Ministry’s policies, plans and regulations governing educational work, supporting the smooth operation of schools from the first day.
Administrative and teaching staff began work on 23 August to complete academic, administrative and organisational preparations and prepare the school environment ahead of the students’ return. Classes are scheduled to begin tomorrow, Sunday, 30 August 2026.
